What is Beef bolognese?
Beef Bolognese or Spaghetti Bolognese is an Italian classic, cooked with ground beef or minced beef, tomatoes, and various herbs and spices.
Usually eaten with spaghetti, the dish can also be used as a filler for lasagna or other Italian cuisines. Beef Bolognese is a rich and tasty dish that will satisfy any appetite.
Brief History of Bolognese Sauce
A meat-based sauce called beef bolognese is named after the Italian city of Bologna. Regular ingredients for the sauce include ground beef, tomatoes, onions, garlic, wine, and milk.
It frequently goes with pasta dishes like spaghetti or tagliatelle. The dish’s main ingredient, beef, provides many nutritional benefits. Beef is rich in protein, iron, and zinc.
Additionally, it has significant amounts of vitamins B3 and B6, which are essential for energy metabolism.
The tomato sauce in Beef Bolognese is an excellent source of lycopene, a vital element that reduces the risk of cancer and heart disease.
Ingredients to make Spaghetti Bolognese
The full recipe is listed below in the recipe card. For now, here’s a quick guide of what you’ll need to make this recipe perfectly each and every single time.
- Minced Beef or Ground Beef: For this recipe, we used 80% ground chuck beef.
- Worcestershire sauce: A little goes a long way. The sauce will transform your dish from “okay” to perfection and high-quality sauce.
- Sugar: Although this ingredient is optional, it is highly recommended. It does help to tone down the acidic and savory flavor.
- Wine: Best that you use a wine you enjoy drinking. However, if you do not have wine, you can purchase cooking wine at the local grocery store. We used red wine vinegar.
- Mirepoix: The flavors from the onions, celery, and carrots will add an additional sweet and savory flavor to the dish.
- Mushroom Crumble: This gives you the allusion that you have a lot more meat in the dish.
How to Make the Perfect Beef Bolognese
Start off by prepping the vegetables and sit them aside when you are done.
Next, cook the meat: In a large skillet or large pot, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until just brown or no longer pink. This process will take up to 10 minutes. Be sure to break the ground beef down as it cooks.
Ground beef should first be browned in a big skillet over medium-high heat. Feel free to drain any extra fat after the steak is fully cooked, but it is not necessary.
Add in the veggies: Add the mirepoix and mushroom crumble. Mix well to combine, cover, and cook for about 10 minutes; stirring constantly.
Add in tomatoes, spices, and wine: Add the crushed tomatoes and mix well. Then add the spices including the sugar to season, and add the herbs along with the tomato paste. Use your spoon to break down the tomato paste as you go. Cover and simmer for about 5 minutes.
Stir in the red wine or red wine vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce, and cook for additional 15 minutes (reduce the heat if needed). Be sure to stir occasionally to avoid sticking to the bottom of the pan.
Finish the sauce: Stir in the heavy cream. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Allow simmering on low heat for 10-15 minutes.
How to Serve?
Once the sauce is complete, stir well and serve your beef Bolognese over a bed of pasta and garnish with fresh herbs and parmesan cheese.
This dish is also great with toasted garlic bread or milk buns.

Cook’s Notes and Pro Tips
- Wine: It is best to use wine that you enjoy drinking. The flavors of the wine will be more pronounced as the alcohol cooks off. A great alternative to wine is wine vinegar. It is low in alcohol but high in acidic flavor. If you don’t want to use wine, consider using broth.
- Do I need to use cream: No. Using cream is optional. However, it does make the dish creamier.
- Cheese alternative: If you do not want to use parmesan cheese, consider using Pecorino Romano, smoked gouda, and Gruyère.
- Thicker beef Bolognese: If the beef Bolognese is too thick, consider adding in about ½ cup pasta water (at a time) to thin it out.

We love Bolognese sauce! In fact, we still make it the old-fashioned way — pancetta, milk, and wine. So yummy and the meat turns out almost creamy. Your sauce looks wonderful too. We love a rich meaty sauce on our pasta. And of course we have to have some homemade bread and a glass of wine. Golly, I’m getting hungry just looking at the photos.

Wine always pairs well. Thank you!
