We all have recipes and ingredients we often go to in order to create a quick easy meal. For us, it’s often this salmon, or this dijon salmon recipe, even this shrimp scampi, and of course our blackened tilapia.
I have realized that our to go trend is seafood. We often opt
A lot of our meals are prepared in the Instant Pot, Air Fryer, especially during the summer days.
But, there’s something about a perfectly cooked piece of fish that just feels like home. And this blackened tilapia? It’s one of those recipes that looks fancy, tastes incredible, but comes together in no time.
If you’ve ever wondered how to make restaurant-style blackened fish at home without overcomplicating things, this is it.
It’s bold, slightly smoky, perfectly seasoned, and cooked until the edges are just right. And the best part? It’s ready in about 15 minutes
What Is Blackened Tilapia?
Blackened tilapia isn’t burned—it’s all about the seasoning and high heat.
The fish is coated in a blend of spices (think paprika, garlic, onion, a little heat), then cooked in a hot pan so the outside forms that deep, flavorful crust while the inside stays tender and flaky.
It’s simple, but the flavor? Anything but.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Ready in under 20 minutes
- Packed with bold, smoky flavor
- Perfect for busy weeknights
- Made with simple pantry spices
- Pairs with just about everything
Ingredients you’ll need to make this recipe
- Tilapia Fish – Feel free to double the recipe if you have more fish.
- N’Orleans Cajun seasoning – create an extra kick and spice.
- Coconut sugar – a healthier option than regular sugar. You may use brown sugar if desired. However, the coconut sugar does not alter the taste of the fish at all.
- Kosher salt and black pepper – Adds extra flavor and stabilize the sugar (be careful if using any type of salt with the Cajun Seasoning). Cajun seasoning already has salt.
- Olive oil – Although you may use vegetable oil or any oil. For this recipe I used olive oil to keep this meal on the lighter healthier side.
- Fresh lemon juice – Optional. This add a hint of acidic flavor to the fish.
How Long To Cook Blackened Tilapia
Tilapia cooks quickly—about 3 to 4 minutes per side depending on thickness.
Overcooking can dry it out, so keep an eye on it. Once it flakes easily, it’s ready.
Best Seasoning for Blackened Tilapia
The key to a good, blackened fish is balance. You want:
- Smoky (paprika)
- Savory (garlic + onion)
- Herbal (thyme or oregano)
- Heat (cayenne — optional but recommended)
👉 This combination creates that signature bold crust without overpowering the fish. Or if you’re in the mood for heat, try it with our Spicy Chipotle Seasoning.
It adds just the right amount of heat without overpowering the fish.
Can You Bake or Air Fry Blackened Tilapia?
Yes, you can.
Oven: Bake at 400°F for 10–12 minutes
Air Fryer: Cook at 375°F for 8–10 minutes
👉 While both methods work, pan-searing gives you the best crust.
