Instant Pot Cabbage is an easy and healthy side dish that’s packed with nutrients. Learn how to make steamed cabbage perfectly in your instant pot so you don’t end up with mushy or overcooked cabbage.

    • Instant pot cabbage in white bowl

This instant pot steam cabbage is the easiest and quickest way to make a healthy side dish while attending to other tasks around the house. Only four ingredients are needed and three minutes of your time to complete this delicious side dish in the instant pot.

I’ll admit I was never a fan of cabbage as a kid. When prepared, they were saturated with oil. A lot of unnecessary seasoning were added and were always overcooked. As an adult, I’ve learned how to cook cabbage the way it’s intended to be prepared.

My method is incredibly easy and require no real effort.

WHY I LOVE THIS INSTANT POT CABBAGE RECIPE?

Caribbeans always pair cabbage with jerk chicken, rice, or plantains. However, these are not the reasons why I love this instant pot cabbage recipe. Here’s why:

    1. This recipe is comforting, quick, and fuss-free, but healthy.
    2. Only require salt and pepper to season it.
    3. Cabbage is very inexpensive.
    4. Pairs well with poultry and carrots and other legumes.
    5. Can be served as a meal alone on a light day.
    6. Easy to make in the slow cooker.
    7. Great for meal prep and one pot pressure cooker meals.
    8. Perfect for weight loss because it’s low calorie.

    INSTANT POT CABBAGE INGREDIENTS:

When it comes to preparing dinner, especially on a busy night, you should never have to worry about running to the store to locate ingredients. This recipe is made with ingredient that are already in your spice cabinet.

The only ingredient you may have to buy is the cabbage. In addition, you’ll need the following ingredients below:

    1. Cabbage Head. A whole cabbage head is best. For a family of 4-6, 1 ½ lb. cabbage head will work. Precut or pre-shredded cabbage will also work, but be careful to not overcook it.
    2. Chicken/beef/or vegetable broth, salt, and pepper to taste. But if you do not want to use beef or chicken broth, the vegetable broth will work well in this recipe also.
    3. Oil or butter. I personally prefer to use good quality oil. For this recipe, I used organic sesame oil. You may opt in to use olive oil, vegetable oil, or butter. The choice is yours.

So let’s jump to how to make this delicious side dish. The takeaway is to not overcook the cabbage. Cabbage cooks really fast. So if making it over the stove (method below) keep an eye on it as you do not want it to be soggy or mushy.

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE THIS CABBAGE INSTANT POT RECIPE:

    • Prep the cabbage. Start by prepping your cabbage, roughly chopped the cabbage – or cut the cabbage in small wedges. Remove any loose or outer layers. Wash and drain the cabbage. Place in the instant pot.
    • cabbage cored then added to Instant pot
    • Add broth, salt, and pepper to taste, oil of your choice or butter.
    • Cover and turn the knob to sealing.  Cook on high temperature for 3 minutes.
    • Quick-release and remove the cabbage.  Serve warm as a side and enjoy.

Below are other ways to prepare and enjoy your cabbage. Apart from cooking it in the instant pot, you can cook the cabbage over the stove.

    • Instant Pot Cabbage season with salt and pepper

HERE’S HOW TO BOIL CABBAGE OVER THE STOVE:

When boiling cabbage over the stove, I recommend using a saucepan.

In a large saucepan, add the chopped cabbage. Add the broth or water. Season with salt and pepper. Add oil or butter. Cover halfway, simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, depending on the size. The larger the cabbage, the longer you will have to cook it.

HOW LONG DOES THIS LOW CARB CABBAGE LAST IN THE REFRIGERATOR?

Low carb cabbage will last for 4-5 days in the refrigerator. I recommend placing the cabbage in an airtight container and reheat as needed throughout the week.

    HOW DO YOU FREEZE CABBAGE?

Cabbage is tricky. Allow the cabbage to cool completely. Once it is cooled, transfer the cooked boiled cabbage to a freezer safe container and freezer for a couple months.

When the cabbage is ready to be reheated, allow it to thaw out then reheat the cabbage over the stove on medium low heat. Add water if needed.

    INSTANT POT CABBAGE PRO TIP:

    1. Can I add more veggies to the cabbage? Absolutely. I like cabbage because it pairs well with other vegetables and absorbs flavor well. You are not limited to the amount of vegetables you can add. The more the better.
    2. Which broth is best to use? You can use any broth: chicken, beef, vegetable; all are great options.
    3. Can I use dry herbs?  Yes, you can add dry or fresh herbs to help enhance the flavor of this side dish. Use what you have on hand.
    4. Can I use pre-shredded cabbage?  If you are using shredded cabbage, I recommend keeping a close eye on it as you do not want the cabbage to overcook.
    5. Can I use frozen vegetables?  Yes, absolutely. You can use frozen or fresh vegetables to accompany this side dish. Whatever you have on hand is perfectly fine with add.
    6. Although this a side dish, the more ingredients you add will transform this dish into a more comprehensive dish.
