There is no breakfast dish as closely tied to the South as this Turkey Sausage Gravy With Biscuits.

Hearty, comforting and totally delicious, this regional dish can be dated way back to the 18th century when workers needed a substantial meal to get them through the day.

Today, it is a savory breakfast treat combining juicy meat smothered in a creamy gravy and piled on top of flaky biscuits. Easy to make and delicious to eat, Turkey Sausage Gravy With Biscuits is comfort food at its very best.

    Breakfast Sausage

This turkey sausage is different from most other varieties in that it is predominantly flavored with sage, though you can also find some that also use maple syrup or cayenne pepper.

Turkey Breakfast sausage is easy to find in the US, being one of the most commonly produced varieties along with Italian sausage.

Though it’s possible to use whatever sausage you like in this recipe, remember that thanks to the use of different spices, the end flavor will be quite different.

You could always use sausage patties or sausage crumbles instead of breakfast sausages, or if you don’t eat turkey, it is also possible to find breakfast sausages made with chicken instead.

    How To Make The Gravy

It takes just a few ingredients to transform that residual fat into creamy, delicious gravy.

Flour is what helps you create that thick consistency that we’re looking for, and it’s important that you let it cook for a few minutes before you add the other ingredients to get rid of the raw flour taste.

Whisking it in will help you avoid any lumps from forming.

Then, all you need is milk, cream, and some generous seasoning with pepper and you’ll have a delicious, Southern style turkey sausage gravy.

You’ll know you’ve reached the desired consistency when it can coat the back of your spoon.

    About The Biscuits

Tender, flaky and golden brown, biscuits are a Southern staple that pair perfectly with breakfast sausage and gravy. You can use already made biscuit dough from the local grocery store. However, if you’d prefer to bake your own biscuits from scratch, consider the following below:

    • There are a few key factors to making successful biscuits. First, keep your butter as cold as possible. If it is too warm to begin with or starts to melt as you are working, then you won’t achieve the desired flakiness and it will affect the biscuit’s texture.
    • You will also need to make sure that your oven is properly pre-heated, as if it’s not hot enough then your biscuits won’t rise (or by the time they do, they will be tough and heavy).
    • Overworking your dough will also result in a tough biscuit – the key is to mix until just combined enough to roll it into a ball. It may sound complicated, but once you’ve got the hang of it, biscuits are easy to put together and should be in the oven in 20 minutes or less. Of course, in a pinch you can always use the canned variety for a low-effort, indulgent breakfast dish.

    Notes

**** Salt was not added to this recipe, but is optional. Breakfast sausages are typically well seasoned, therefore salt and pepper is to taste.
*** Cook on low to medium heat to prevent milk from overcooking or boiling over, and to prevent burning the sausages when combining with flour.
