Apart from the ease of preparing it, it also makes for a perfect soup choice when asparagus is in season.
We will not only discuss the asparagus soup, but we’ll also be touching base on its history, important ingredients to use to make this soup extra special and flavorful, and some essential preparation and preservation details.
Origin of the Asparagus Soup
Unlike many vegetables at the time, asparagus was a plant reserved only for the royal courts of Europe in the 16th century.
Towards the middle of the 17th century, the plant made its way to the court of King Louis XIV, who grew fond of it and mandated that it be grown in France. Thus, the soup was said to have originated in France.
Apart from France, North America was also another area that greatly influenced the development of asparagus soup.
The plant also made its way into America around 1685 when the earliest colonists settled in the area.
The founder of the Pennsylvania colony, William Penn, added Asparagus to the list of crops that grows easily in the colony.
Thus, it is not surprising that there are lots of recipes and cookbooks that contain instructions for the asparagus soup around this time.
From the American Frugal Housewife to the Directions for Cookery, these old American recipes and cookbooks gave varying instructions that helped shape the preparation of the asparagus soup over time.
Ingredients For Making Asparagus Soup
Asparagus
This is the star of the dish. The vegetable itself is the most important ingredient used in making this dish.
One cannot mistake the vegetable as it features long and pointy spears. The vegetable can be grilled, roasted, fried, or steamed.
However, for the asparagus soup, you need to cook the asparagus.
Chicken Broth or Chicken Stock
Another important ingredient that you may incorporate into the making of your asparagus soup is Chicken Broth.
If you do not have enough of the broth, you can also combine it with the Vegetable Demi-Glace, which will add depth of flavor to your soup.
Made from chicken meat and bones, and simmered over a period, the chicken broth provides an impressive chicken flavor that makes the asparagus soup delicious and irresistible.
You can also use chicken stock in place of chicken broth.
There is not much difference between the two except that the chicken stock is thicker and has a much fuller flavor than chicken broth.
This is because the chicken stock is made from bones while the broth is made from meat.
Heavy Cream Or Milk
The heavy cream will make the soup nice and creamy. If you would prefer a non diary option, feel free to use coconut cream instead.
If you are vegan, feel free to use almond milk or coconut milk.
Garnish Or Cook With Dill
Garnishing or cooking with dill is completely optional. However, the dill will help to tie the flavors together and works well with the heavy cream.
