    Our easy end of summer, early fall and holiday favorite; this candied plum topped with a generous scoop of ice cream is the perfect treat to make any dessert night worthwhile.

    What are sugar plums?

    Also known as sugar plums, candied plums are plums that are cooked in sugar. 

    Plums have a unique taste. 

     

    They are both sweet and sharp with a rounded, fruity note that’s hard to describe. 

    Plums vs Prunes

    Plums are related to peaches, apricot, cherry, and almond. Plum is a fruit that belongs to the plant genus Prunus.

    Plums can be made into juice, jam, baked in cakes, or may be used as a topping over pancakes or salad.  

    Kinds Of Plums

    Plums are fascinating as they come in different colors, flavors, textures and grows differently depending on the region.

    There are at least over 20 different types of plums. Most plums are imported from other countries to the United States. 

    The most common plums are the Japanese plums which comes in black, red and yellow colors. When it comes to picking plums, the Santa Rosas is the most available and popular plum.

    Plum reduces the risk of heart disease and can help to keep the digestive system working well. 

    They are also known to have a high number of antioxidants which has been shown to have a link to reduce anxiety when regularly consumed. 

    Plums are high in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B2, and potassium.

    Cooking Method

    Making this fun treat is easy! All you need are plums, sugar, butter, water, vanilla extract, and your chosen toppings like ice cream, whipped cream or nuts. 

    Stovetop Method

    Slice the plums evenly. In a small saucepan, add the butter, plums, water, sugar, and vanilla extract. 

    Cook over medium low heat covered for 3 minutes. Stirring occasionally. 

    Remove from stove, allow to cool, and serve as a topping over your favorite ice cream. 

    Air Fryer Method

    Cut the plums in half. Remove the seed. Set aside. 

    In a small bowl, add the butter and let in the microwave. Then add the sugar and vanilla extract. Mix well to combine. 

    Use a pastry brush, brush the mixture over the plums. Place in a tray or air fryer basket. Cook for 10 minutes at 400 degrees. 

    Remove the plums from the basket and top with your favorite ice cream, whipped cream, yogurt, or nuts.

    Are prunes and plums the same?

    Prunes are dried plums, but not all plums are prunes.

    When are plums ready to pick?

    Plums are known as end of summer fruit and an introduction to fall fruit. Depending on the region, they are harvested from late summer into fall.

    Plums are ready to pick when you use your fingers to apply a soft pressure, as you will notice the skin feels soft. This is also an indication that the fruit is read to be picked.

    Ingredients
      

    • 4 Plums
    • 1 Tbsp. Butter
