Let me tell you something—this beef bolognese is one of those recipes that just slows everything down in the best way.

Beef Bolognese is a traditional Italian meal with tomatoes, ground meat, cream, and herbs. It’s a hearty meal that fills the house with its exquisite aroma for hours.

It’s rich, hearty, and deeply comforting. The kind of meal that fills your kitchen with warmth long before it ever hits your plate.

    And honestly? It’s not complicated.

It’s just real ingredients, cooked with intention, and given the time they need to turn into something truly special.

This is the kind of recipe you come back to again and again.

    What is Beef bolognese?

Beef Bolognese or Spaghetti Bolognese is an Italian classic, cooked with ground beef or minced beef, tomatoes, and various herbs and spices.

Usually eaten with spaghetti, the dish can also be used as a filler for lasagna or other Italian cuisines. Beef Bolognese is a rich and tasty dish that will satisfy any appetite.

    Brief History of Bolognese Sauce

A meat-based sauce called beef bolognese is named after the Italian city of Bologna. Regular ingredients for the sauce include ground beef, tomatoes, onions, garlic, wine, and milk.

It frequently goes with pasta dishes like spaghetti or tagliatelle. The dish’s main ingredient, beef, provides many nutritional benefits. Beef is rich in protein, iron, and zinc.

A Sauce That Feels Like Home

Here’s why this version works beautifully:

    • It’s simple but intentional
    • The flavors are layered, not rushed
    • The texture is rich and balanced
    • It’s made for real-life cooking

And the biggest secret is time.

The longer it simmers, the deeper and more developed the flavor becomes.

Additionally, it has significant amounts of vitamins B3 and B6, which are essential for energy metabolism.

The tomato sauce in Beef Bolognese is an excellent source of lycopene, a vital element that reduces the risk of cancer and heart disease.

    Ingredients to make Spaghetti Bolognese

The full recipe is listed below in the recipe card. For now, here’s a quick guide of what you’ll need to make this recipe perfectly each and every single time.

    beef bolognese garnished with parsley
    • Minced Beef or Ground Beef: For this recipe, we used 80% ground chuck beef.
    • Worcestershire sauce: A little goes a long way. The sauce will transform your dish from “okay” to perfection and high-quality sauce.
    • Sugar: Although this ingredient is optional, it is highly recommended. It does help to tone down the acidic and savory flavor.
    • Wine: Best that you use a wine you enjoy drinking. However, if you do not have wine, you can purchase cooking wine at the local grocery store. We used red wine vinegar.
    • Mirepoix: The flavors from the onions, celery, and carrots will add an additional sweet and savory flavor to the dish.
    • Mushroom Crumble: This gives you the allusion that you have a lot more meat in the dish.

How to Make the Perfect Beef Bolognese

Start off by prepping the vegetables and sit them aside when you are done.

    ADDING MINCED MEAT TO BRAISER
ADDED MIREPOIX AND MUSHROOM TO MEAT MIXTURE
    MIXING MEAT AND VEGETABLES

Next, cook the meat: In a large skillet or large pot, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until just brown or no longer pink. This process will take up to 10 minutes. Be sure to break the ground beef down as it cooks.

Ground beef should first be browned in a big skillet over medium-high heat. Feel free to drain any extra fat after the steak is fully cooked, but it is not necessary.

Add in the veggies: Add the mirepoix and mushroom crumble. Mix well to combine, cover, and cook for about 10 minutes; stirring constantly.

    ADDING CRUSHED TOMATOES TO MIXTURE
    ADDING TOMATO PASTE TO MIXTURE
    ADDING CREAMER TO MIXTURE

Add in tomatoes, spices, and wine: Add the crushed tomatoes and mix well. Then add the spices including the sugar to season, and add the herbs along with the tomato paste. Use your spoon to break down the tomato paste as you go. Cover and simmer for about 5 minutes.

Stir in the red wine or red wine vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce, and cook for additional 15 minutes (reduce the heat if needed). Be sure to stir occasionally to avoid sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Finish the sauce: Stir in the heavy cream. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Allow simmering on low heat for 10-15 minutes.

    How to Serve?

Once the sauce is complete, stir well and serve your beef Bolognese over a bed of pasta and garnish with fresh herbs and parmesan cheese.

    SPAGHETTI TOPPED WITH BEEF BOLOGNESE

This dish is also great with toasted garlic bread or milk buns.

    Varieties of Beef Bolognese

There are different types of beef bolognese, each with its unique flavor and ingredients.

    • The most common beef bolognese is a classic Italian dish that consists of ground beef, tomatoes, garlic, and onions.
    • The American version consists of ground beef, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce.
    • The French version is made from ground beef, red wine, and mushrooms.
    • The Mexican version contains ground beef, chili peppers, and tomatoes.

    Cook’s Notes and Pro Tips

    • Wine: It is best to use wine that you enjoy drinking. The flavors of the wine will be more pronounced as the alcohol cooks off. A great alternative to wine is wine vinegar. It is low in alcohol but high in acidic flavor. If you don’t want to use wine, consider using broth.
    • Do I need to use cream: No. Using cream is optional. However, it does make the dish creamier.
    • Cheese alternative: If you do not want to use parmesan cheese, consider using Pecorino Romano, smoked gouda, and Gruyère.
    • Thicker beef Bolognese: If the beef Bolognese is too thick, consider adding in about ½ cup pasta water (at a time) to thin it out.

    How To Make It Gluten-Free

To make this bolognese sauce recipe gluten-free, we recommend that you use gluten-free pasta or zoodles.

What to Serve with Beef Bolognese

This Spaghetti bolognese or Beef Bolognese is a classic Italian dish that’s rich, flavorful, and surprisingly easy to make.

With the right ingredients and technique, you can make a delicious bowl of this tasty Italian fare in no time.

Whether looking for an easy weeknight dinner or something special to surprise your guests, this recipe comes together quickly.

Consider serving this recipe with mashed cauliflower, air fryer asparagus, green beans, kale salad, or with this watercress salad.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between spaghetti sauce and bolognese?

Spaghetti sauce often uses pureed tomatoes and bolognese is made of a thick meaty, vegetable sauce.

    Can you freeze bolognese sauce?

Yes. Once your beef bolognese sauce has cooled, transfer it to an airtight freezer-safe container and freeze it for up to 6 months.

How do I reheat bolognese sauce?

If your sauce is frozen, thaw the sauce out first in the refrigerator. Best to do this overnight. u003cbr/u003eYou may reheat the sauce in the microwave or over the stovetop on low heat until it has heated through.

How do you make the bolognese sauce thicker?

To make your sauce thicker, add heavy cream or starch to the sauce. Also, allow the liquid to reduce in half for a thicker and chunkier sauce.

Why do you add milk to bolognese sauce?

Adding milk or creamer to the Bolognese will make it richer and creamier.

What is the difference between meat sauce and bolognese?

Bolognese is a type of sauce that’s rich in vegetables and minced meat. It is also creamy due to the addition of cream. u003cbr/u003ePasta sauce with minced meat does not include vegetables nor does it include milk or creamer.

    Best Pasta for Bolognese

Not all pasta is created equal here. These are my favorites:

    • Rigatoni
    • Pappardelle
    • Spaghetti

Thicker pasta holds onto that rich sauce better—and every bite feels complete.

    Storing Options

Store leftover beef Bolognese or spaghetti Bolognese in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

After cooling the sauce, freeze a batch of this beef bolognese sauce in a freezer-safe container or in a  ziplock bag for up to 6 months.

We love Bolognese sauce! In fact, we still make it the old-fashioned way — pancetta, milk, and wine. So yummy and the meat turns out almost creamy. Your sauce looks wonderful too. We love a rich meaty sauce on our pasta. And of course we have to have some homemade bread and a glass of wine. Golly, I’m getting hungry just looking at the photos.
