1½cupsvegetable oilfor frying
Instructions
Season the fish. Pat the cleaned tilapia thoroughly dry. Generously season the outside and inside cavity with Aux Cayes Fish Seasoning.Marinate overnight. Cover and refrigerate the seasoned fish overnight to allow the flavors to develop.Make the breading. When ready to fry, combine the finely ground seasoned breadcrumbs, all-purpose flour, and cayenne pepper in a shallow dish.Coat the tilapia. Coat the fish on both sides with the breadcrumb mixture, gently pressing it onto the surface. Shake off any excess coating.
Heat the oil. Add the vegetable oil to a large skillet and heat over medium-high heat until hot. About 330 degrees to no more than 350 degrees.Fry the first side.Carefully lower the fish into the hot oil. Fry undisturbed for 5–10 minutes, or until the underside develops a deep golden-brown crust.Carefully flip.Once the first side is golden and releases easily, carefully turn the fish over. Support the whole fish while flipping so it doesn't break apart.Fry the second side for another 5–10 minutes, undisturbed, until golden brown and the fish is cooked through.Drain and serve.Carefully remove the fish from the oil and allow excess oil to drain. Serve hot.

FAQs
How do you keep whole tilapia from falling apart when frying?Once the fish goes into the hot oil, avoid moving it unnecessarily. Let the first side develop a golden crust before attempting to flip it. When it's ready, carefully support the whole fish with a wide spatula—or two spatulas—and turn it gently. Moving or flipping the fish too early can cause the coating to stick and the fish to break. How long does it take to pan fry a whole tilapia? For the 1-pound whole red tilapia used in this recipe, allow approximately 5–10 minutes per side. Cooking time can vary depending on the thickness of your fish and the temperature of the oil. The flesh should be opaque and flaky, with an internal temperature of 145°F at the thickest part.Do I have to marinate tilapia overnight? No. You can marinate it for a shorter period when you're pressed for time, but I prefer seasoning my whole tilapia and refrigerating it overnight. Since we're cooking a whole fish rather than thin fillets, the extra time allows the Aux Cayes Fish Seasoning to develop more flavor.**** When printing the recipe, please unselect the camera so that the pictures are NOT printed with the recipe (if preferred).Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links.
